What are you wearing today?
Every
single morning, I stare at my closet and contemplate the age-old question: What
am I wearing today?
Working at a fashion magazine (never thought I’d label GL as that but A: I
think our fashion is awesome and B: We got in so many clothes for our second
annual personal style issue, I’ve spent the last two months wading through
piles of pants and stacks of sweaters just to get to my desk), the daily
dressing dilemma is daunting.
Let me be the first to inform you that the GL darlings certainly don't wear
Prada, despite everyone’s favorite magazine movie title misconception. It’s
more like Payless. But yet everyone has an amazing look that’s so her.
Brittany, our online editor, has a quirky, feminine vintage vibe. Kelsey, our
beauty editor, has this laid-back L.A. girl thing goin’. Entertainment editor
Trish is the queen of mixing bargain buys with statement pieces. And our
fashion editor Jess amazes me every day with her ensembles, which look a lot
like the outfits you see in our issues (Blazer? Check. Belted? Check. Boots?
Check).
My personal style depends on the day. Flying six hours to L.A. at 5 a.m. before
heading right to see an advertiser? Love me a sweater dress, which is comfy as
sweats but still sharp. Big business meeting at the bank? Heels, please (can’t
beat the confidence that comes with topping out at 6’2”). Doing a photo shoot?
I throw on my hiking fanny pack that everyone makes fun of…until they need a
place to put their water bottle or cell phone.
The bottom line? While other people dress for fashion, I dress for function.
And I’m OK with that. My clothing choices are a daily reminder that I spend my
days doing something I love. The legendary Vogue editor Diana Vreeland said it
best, “a new dress doesn't get you anywhere—it's the life you're living in the
dress.”
