8 ways to support the LGBTQ+ community this #pridemonth
June is LGBTQ+ Pride Month! This month is dedicated to celebrating and advocating for those who identify as lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer/questioning (and more!). You should advocate for the LGBTQ+ community year round, but June is *especially* chock-full of celebratory activities. No matter if you're LGBTQ+ or just an ally (aka someone who supports and sticks up for their LGBTQ+ loved ones) here eight ways to get out there and celebrate Pride.
1. Shop at stores that preach equality and acceptance of the LGBTQ+ community
Stores such as Target, Starbucks and Nike have openly supported LGBTQ+ organizations such as GLAAD. By choosing to support companies that are allies, you are fueling the fire toward a more inclusive world!
2. Sign petitions you believe in
You don’t need to donate large sums of money to show you care. On websites like ThePetitionSite.com, you can take stand against global prejudice of the LGBTQ+ community. By simply signing your name, you'll join over 1.4 million people in the fight.
3. Go to a pride parade
Check here to see what pride parades are all about and to find a parade in your area.
4. Join your school’s Gay-Straight Alliance or another LGBTQ+ alliance club
See if your school has a club dedicated to making the halls more inclusive and accepting. If not, create one!
5. Educate yourself by tailoring your Netflix queue
There are plenty of ways to stay woke, and documentaries are one of them. This weekend, grab some popcorn and check out the LGBTQ+ docs Netflix has to offer.
6. Learn other points of view via podcasts
Podcasts are another easy way to stay informed and educate yourself. Listen to them in the car, in the shower, on the bus or wherever to broaden your scope of understanding. We highly-recommend Tyler Oakley's podcast, Psychobabble.
7. Write to your state senator or representative
We’ve all heard the saying, “Actions speak louder than words.” So, reach out to your local representative and reiterate the importance of things like gender inclusive bathrooms in public schools
8. Donate to LGBTQ+ organizations
If you can, make a donation to organizations like The Human Rights Campaign or GLAAD. While donating your time and energy is crucial, even donating as little as ten dollars can help make sure these non-profits keep their doors open so they can continue making a difference in the lives of LGBTQ+ folks.
