411 on fake nails

I have very thick and hard nails. I can grow them really long without breaking them, and they grow really fast. But, I've always wanted to try fake nails. My mom says that the glue weakens your nails and it will affect your nails for months. Is this true?

Your mom is right on the money with this one. Fake nails don’t allow your real nails to breathe, which can make them soft and slow down their growth. You should not wear acrylic nails for long periods of time for this reason. The glue itself can also be incredibly difficult to remove, and can take a layer of your nail with it.

The greater risk of fake nails, however, is infection. If you or the manicurist who glues on your nails leave a gap between the fake nail and your real nail, you’re leaving yourself open to bacterial growth. It’s easy to do and can be caused by simply bumping the nail while you’re applying the rest of the set. To avoid this, go to a reputable salon that thoroughly sanitizes its instruments.

Good luck, babe!
