How to stay active when sports are *so* not your thing

“So, do you play any sports?” is a question that I frequently get asked. And why wouldn’t it be? I’m eighteen, born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland (often dubbed as the “home of lacrosse”), and can be recognized easily in a crowd by my signature high ponytail and, often, workout gear.

The truth is, I’m just not a sporty type of gal. I played lacrosse, tennis and basketball during my middle school years, but nothing gave me more happiness and confidence than singing with my a capella group or spending time outdoors. Upon that realization, I quit team sports and decided to pursue other interests. But quitting sports and turning to new hobbies hasn’t stopped me from wanting to stay active.

Exercise is an essential part of living a healthy lifestyle, especially as you move through your teenage years into adulthood. Whenever you get that recommended 60 minutes of exercise, your body releases chemicals called endorphins which help to relieve stress. Whether you’re an active athlete looking for more ways to stay fit or someone who prefers to cheer from the bleachers, here are some activities that you can do to step up your workout game (without actually having to step on a court or a field).

1. Take a hike—and make it a group effort.

This one is my personal favorite. This activity has so many benefits: spending time outdoors, getting that sun-kissed glow and an instant energy boost. Try finding a hiking trail near you, grab your BFFs, pump up the tunes and take your Instagram workout game to the next level.

2. Try out a yoga class.

Believe it or not, there are plenty of opportunities for teens and tweens to take yoga. Join the ranks of celebs such as Lauren Taylor, Willow Shields and Sophie Reynolds—they all swear by it! Head online to find a class near you.

3. Just dance.

Whether it’s in the form of taking a Zumba class or practicing endlessly in rehearsal for that big number in your school musical—or even having a dance party at home—dancing is the perfect way to energize your day.

4. Go ice skating.

It’s a fun alternative and a great group activity. There’s no better way to cool off than to hit your local rink.

5. Get outside and go to the playground.

Okay, I know. It may seem *so* elementary school, but trust me on this: You’re never too old for the monkey bars or to play fetch with your dog or even to start a game of tag. Feel like a kid again and run outside for a few minutes to burn some calories.
