TUESDAY Q-DAY: To Lift or Not to Lift?

I like to run, but my BFF says that it’s better for gals our age to lift weights. Who’s right and what kind of workout should I do?

You’re sooo right, but your bestie is, too...sorta. The best kind of workout is one that combines these two fitness elements for a complete killer workout. We spoke to trainer Andrea Partland to get the skinny on what kind of workouts are best for teens.

She recommended that girls under 16 focus on “calisthenics, aerobics and team sports.” Calisthenics are those standard PE exercises, like situps, pushups and squats. They tone muscle, but don’t necessarily use heavy weights to do it.

For those of ya that are over 16, Andrea recommends adding weight training and focusing a bit more on flexibility and agility (think: yoga or daily stretching). But in your rush to lift, don’t ditch the running shoes either. Keepin’ up with cardio will keep your heart in shape.

“Most likely if you are active and lean as a teen you will continue those habits throughout your lifetime. Also, exercise whether it be individual or group gives the teen more confidence and sense of self worth,” Andrea explains. As if you needed another reason to sign up for summer softball!
