Only half of your chicken nugget is actual meat. So...what's the other half?
Researchers in Mississippi bought up chicken nuggets from national fast food chains and examined them to see what exactly their crunchy, deep-frieid exteriors contained. And two of them, it turns out, were 50 percent or less actual chicken meat. The rest of the nugget was made up of fat, blood vessels and nerves. Say it with us: Ewww!
While these two chicken nuggets certainly don't represent all of the options on the market, both at restaurants and in grocery stores, it's good to keep in mind that those yummy bites aren't really the best thing to be noshing on. The researchers say that eating them every once in a while doesn't pose a problem, but for a tasty compromise that's way healthier, try cooking up your own nuggets at home and either pan frying them in a little oil or tossing them in the oven. Yum!
