Ya want a side salad with that? McD's and BK take a chance on healthier sides

Way back when, McDonald's and Burger King were in a race to see who could come up with the best-tasting French fry. It didn't matter how many calories or grams of fat were packed into it. We didn't care what kind of oil it was fried in or what the ingredient list said. It was all about the fry--'cause after all, who went to Mickey D's or BK for health food?

In the last five years or so, all of that has changed. We've seen salads and "healthy" wraps added to menus at fast food joints across the country, and milk and apple slices are replacing soda and fries in Happy Meals. But now, these restaurants are taking it a step further. Last week, Burger King introduced a healthier, crinkle-cut fry, which they have dubbed "Satisfries." (Consumer Reports tested them out and have said that they taste pretty similar to a normal BK fry, but with 30 percent fewer calories and 40 percent less fat than a McD's fry.)

Not to be outdone, McDonald's also announced last week that would allow customers to pick salads, fruit or veggies instead of French fries to go with their value meals for no additional cost, starting in early 2014. Interestingly enough, HuffPo reports that some of these options are available in slimmer countries, like France, already. Hmm.

Bottom line? Fast food menus are continuing to take aim at the growing market for healthy choices as restaurants...but will it make a difference?

Tell us, babes: If you were eating at McDonald's or Burger King, would you swap your normal French fries for a healthier option? Share your thoughts in the comments!
