The simple guide to cleaning your room (and keeping it tidy)

If you want to learn how to keep your room clean (and we're talking beyond just picking up dirty clothes), it can be hard to know where to start. From when to clean what, to how to tackle the trickiest parts of spring cleaning, this guide is for you.

If you want to know: How do you keep your bed clean?
It's super important to keep the place that you spend 1/3 of your time in feeling comfy and clean. Change your sheets to a clean set ~at least~ every 2 weeks, and wipe down your bed frame with a wet cloth to remove any dust or grime. If you have extra pillowcases, those should be changed out more than once a week—which will benefit your skin and hair.

If you want to know: How do you clean out your closet?
Scouring the best deals can fill up your closet *super* fast, and most of the time, it can be hard to decide what to get rid of to make room. Spend a Saturday going through all the clothes in your closet and sorting through the ones that you want to keep, the ones to donate and the ones to trash. Clothes that don't fit you or your aesthetic are an automatic remove, and use your best judgment on the rest!

If you want to know: When do I clean my room?
This is a tricky one, because it depends on which part of your room you're cleaning. Keep your room tidy by picking it up every day, but vacuuming really only has to happen once a week. Dusting should take place once or twice a month. Empty your trash at least once a week (more if you're throwing away food). And, yes, technically your makeup brushes aren't part of your room, but they should be cleaned about once a week, too.

If you want to know: Do I need to disinfect my room?
While you've probably seen your teachers disinfect your classroom after a lesson, you don't need to treat your room the same way. The exception for that is if you, or someone else in your house, has been sick recently. If that is the case, you can wipe down commonly used surfaces—doorknobs, countertops and electronics—with a disinfectant.

If you want to know: Now that my room is clean, how do I tell my friends not to mess it up?
This can be a tough conversation to have with your friends. Your room should be a safe haven for you, and if you feel like you're always stuck spending your Sundays cleaning from Saturday night's sleepover, it might be time to talk with your friends about reducing the mess. Even just a simple "Hey guys, before we go to sleep, let's grab all the trash and throw it out," can not only lessen the work for you, but also let all of your BFFs sleep in a cleaner space.
