10 tips to having a great first sleepover

Sleepovers are like a rite of passage. You see them in teen movies all the time, and everybody at school talks about their Saturday night slumber parties so nonchalantly. But when ya haven’t slept over at anyone’s house yet, the whole idea of being away from home is kind of terrifying. We get it—that’s why we’re giving you tried-and-true insider secrets from girls who’ve been there, done that, and had a blast. Have fun, hunnie!

Ask if you should bring a sleeping bag. And when in doubt, bring it (and a pillow).

Double check your bag. Have a spare outfit, undies and a bra, pajamas and your toiletries.

Arrive on time. Don’t come early, since your bud might not be ready for you. And if you think you’re gonna be late, text or call to let her know.

Come with ideas. Because sitting there staring at each other gets old fast. Bring a favorite game or movie along.

Have an open mind. Different families do things differently, so don’t judge.

When in doubt, err on the side of politeness. Sit back until you’ve got the house rules down before you go helping yourself to the refrigerator.

Bring a reminder of home. Trust us, nobody will laugh at your stuffed animal—they’ll whip out their own teddies and swap stories with ya.

Be a sweetie and take along a brown-bag breakfast. Donuts, muffins, bagels—it’s all good! Or, ask if you can pick up a pizza on your way over.

Send a thank-you note to the whole family. Your bud’s parents will be charmed, guaranteed.

Offer to host next time—and then follow through. Swapping houses whenever possible is the courteous thing to do.
