September 11: A Teen's Perspective

On September 11, 2001, tragedy struck the United States as the Twin Towers in New York, among other buildings, were destroyed after hijacked planes flew into them by a group of attackers. Thousands died and millions more were struck with grief, pain and loss. For some of us, this day still remains an extremely vivid image in our minds. For younger girls, it might be nothing but a vague memory from kindergarten.

Although there are many perspectives accounted for and written by adults who encountered 9/11 in mind-blowing ways, very few of the younger generation can remember the emotions they felt as they watched the towers collapse.

David Levithan, author of Boy Meets Boy and Nick & Norah’s Infinite Playlist is helping to change that. He brings together the stories of three teenagers from before and after the 9/11 events in his latest book Love is the Higher Law.

Read about the changes and tragedies of Claire, Jasper and Peter. Imagine being trapped in the madness of people fleeing from burning buildings, unaware of where your parents are, or just waking up to the tragedy that everyone else endured with all its vivacity. As each teen gets to know the other, their moments become intertwined, leading to new understandings and friendships. These teens are stricken with unexplainable turmoil and, with love, are able to heal the wounds inflicted by such a painful day in U.S. history, hopefully allowing readers to do just the same.
