Second Skin

Samantha Klein wants nothing more than to be popular—seriously. Until Kiley Frank, the “it” girl of Woodlawn High, moves in next door…

The highlight of Sam’s day is sitting in homeroom sandwiched between Kiley and her two best friends, trying to live her life through their gossip. It’s probably not too much of an exaggeration to say Sam would kill just to get Kiley to say hello to her in the hall. So it’s no surprise that when Sam finds out how to do it she steals Kiley’s popularity—literally!

When Kiley lets it slip that she gets her popular superpowers from a weird bodysuit called “Second Skin,” Sam knows she has to try it out for herself. And just like that, Sam Klein is the new queen of Woodlawn and Kiley crashes and burns.

In her record-breaking jump from invisibility to the spotlight, Sam had to drop a few things (like her grades, friends, free time and her parents’ good opinion of her) but she more than makes up for it with her new popular pals, position on the pep squad, party planning for the spring dance and, of course, dating the hottest guy on the lacrosse team, Tanner Mullins.

But Sam can’t shake the feeling that something’s wrong and, even worse, she can hardly shake the Skin. It’s getting tighter and tighter the more popular she becomes. Soon, she’ll probably never be able to take it off, making Sam question if popularity is really all it’s cracked up to be.

For any girl who’s ever wondered what it’s like to be someone else, Jessica Wellman’s book is a great look at the dangers of walking in someone else’s shoes or, in this case, skin. The characters are described so well that you feel like you know them by the second chapter.

On shelves now, Second Skin is a great pre-school read that will make you feel like you can face any drama the next school year can throw at you!
