Diamonds are a girl's best friend?

When I first picked up Ted Michael's book the Diamonds, I predicted a story about a few snobby teenage girls, popularity, boys, friendship and drama. I was, in fact, correct. But, I totally underestimated the quality. What I figured would be a superficial tale of spoiled girls turned out to be an entertaining, light, easy read.

The Diamonds make up an elite social clique at the Bennington School.  Ringleader Clarissa is the beautiful one, Priya is "the fun one," Lili is the smartest and Marni seems to just go with the flow. For years the four girls have been best friends, practically joined at the hip. They impress fear onto those who walk among them in the halls and get all the perks that come along with ultra popularity.

The Diamonds choose to join the mock trial club and transform the student organization into their own Diamond Court. They elect jurors (mainly those who will support their rules), design their own robes and even create their own constitution to run the club. Marni takes it upon herself to create the "Diamond Rules" which act as a quasi-constitution.

Soon enough, Marni sets her sights on Anderson, Clarissa's ex-boyfriend.  As many girls are aware, there is an unwritten law that your best friend's ex-boyfriends are off limits. Knowing she may hurt Clarissa, Marni goes after Anderson anyway. Clarissa turns Marni's life upside down. She drops off the social ladder and loses everything that has gotten her through high school so far.

Rather than fading into the background, though, Marni decides it's up to her to stand up to her former friends and bring down the corrupt rules she helped create. But can Marni and her new friends find a way through the fake government?
