Same Difference

You saw it in our April/May issue (if you haven’t yet, flip to page 46). But here’s a closer look at one of our must reads for spring…

Emily Thompson seems like your average girl from the suburbs of Cherry Grove, New Jersey. She’s accustomed to her seemingly perfect life with her best friend—and next-door neighbor—Meg, and floating by in her small town where the local Starbucks is a big deal.

It’s the summer before senior year of high school, though, and Emily’s looking for a little change. But after being accepted into the Philadelphia College of Fine Art’s summer program, her perfect world doesn’t look so pretty anymore. Emily struggles to find the balance between her artistic side and boring home life and is forced with a tough decision: should she make bonds stronger with her art school crew or sacrifice herself for her friendship with Meg.

Philadelphia is definitely a place of adventure and freedom for this normally shy chica. But will she survive and stand up to the pressures coming from her “bubbled” world back home?

Same Difference by Siobhan Vivian is a good pick for those who love shows like MTV’s Taking the Stage, where real students get to express their talents with all of their dramas and real lives.

Author Fun Fact: Siobhan Vivian actually attended an art school similar to the one she describes in Same Difference. Lucky for us…she discovered she was better at writing.

Named as a Spring 2009 Indie Next Pick, the book is out in stores now.

What artistic talents do you think you could pursue at an art school? Blog it out!
