Everything you need to know about Against the Current

Fiercely talented, Against the Current is a musical force to be reckoned with. The New York-based band—which consists of Chrissy Costanza, Dan Gow and Will Ferri—has a vibe that's hard to categorize, but that hasn't seemed to hinder them thus far: Their latest release, In Our Bones, entered Billboard’s Top New Artists chart at #2 and *also* hit #2 on iTunes Top Alternative Albums chart when it was released this May. Not only an amazing pop-rock band, frontwoman Chrissy is also a beauty guru of sorts and posts fan-*tastic* tutorials (like this to-die-for violet highlight) on her personal YouTube channel—you know, when she's not belting out songs like "Young and Relentless," their latest single, for their adoring fans.

The band is currently rocking around the globe on their on their In Our Bones world tour, but before you catch 'em live, get to know the band a bit better first.

They spent the summer on the Vans Warped Tour.

"Warped Tour is completely in a league of its own," Chrissy spilled to GL. "It's this crazy cross between a real, full tour and a festival. We haven’t done a whole lot of touring with a lot of other bands before, so doing Warped Tour was awesome because we were able to make so many different friends and hang out with so many people [such as bands Roam and Yellowcard] everyday and it’s just like you're living in your own community all summer."

Doing your makeup on the road is not easy.

"I love doing my makeup. It’s like my zen time everyday like. Some people meditate, I like doing my makeup. It very much relaxes me. I have recently discovered these makeup cases—they’re like makeup artist's makeup cases. Mines a carry on suitcase size—like really tiny—and it’s been my savior for doing makeup on the road. It has super bright lights so I can get perfect lighting. In all these venues (even some of the biggest venues!) the lighting is absolutely terrible."

Their In Your Bones tour is hitting a *ton* of countries.

"We’ve already done Asia and Europe which was unbelievable. It was our third time back in Asia, we had such a blast there. Europe was just unbelievable and we got to play the biggest show we’ve ever played in Europe in London so it was crazy."

They're stoked to be back in the states.

"We're just really excited to start the US leg of the tour and bring it all back to where it started, back to our home. We’re also very excited that our phones are going to work here, and we that don’t have to replace the SIM card!"

Their video for "Young and Relentless" is way different than anything they've ever done.

"Most of our videos have all these narratives and a lot going on, and that video was just like, 'Let's go and spend the day off in Chicago and have a really fun day.' We are all so passionate about music that we want to relentlessly pursue this passion of ours," Chrissy says of the song's meaning.

Hayley Williams from Paramore influenced Chrissy a *ton*.

"I was at this music school and every month you would do cover shows and this one in particular was 'Women of Rock,' and I got assigned a Paramore song! I had done a lot of musical theater [previously] and I was just starting to get my bearings thinking, 'This girl's voice is crazy!' and 'How am I supposed to sing this song?' It was around the time that Riot! was massive and I was blown away immediately. I was just confused in the best way."

The band spilled their feelings each time they stepped into the studio.

"We really wanted to write this record to have each song stand on its own. So we spent a lot of time really cultivating each song and making sure each song had its own personality and that they all came from real life. We’ve always found that writing about what we know is the best solution, or writing about something from our perspective. We kind of just based [the album] on what we were feeling each day when we went in to write each song."

The name of their album has a deep and significant meaning.

"We feel this passion that we have for music and this relentless need to pursue it and follow it and go wherever it takes. It's just something that’s ingrained into us—it's ingrained in us so deeply that we say it’s 'in our bones.' It’s not something we picked up, it’s not something we decided to do or that we wanted to do because we saw someone else doing it, it’s just something that was always a part of us."
