Must List

Fight dating violence with "Reviving Ophelia"

The Lifetime channel is known for its edgy dramas, but they've outdone themselves with their newest made-for-TV film, Reviving Ophelia, premiering at 9 p.m. Monday, Oct. 11. We caught the flick before it airs and definitely think it’s a must-see.

The drama centers around two cousins, Elizabeth (Rebecca Williams) and Kelli (Carleigh Beverly). Elizabeth has a seemingly perfect life, with the seemingly perfect boyfriend to match. But all is not as it seems as Kelli, who couldn't be more opposite from her cousin, finds out that the mysterious injuries Lizzy has been explaining as accidents are actually coming from her BF Mark.

Elizabeth is in an abusive relationship. Mark is exhibiting all the common signs of an abuser: He constantly calls and texts, gets upset when she doesn't answer right away, follows her when she is with her friends and he physically assaults her. But Mark always apologizes, saying he can change. Even the audience almost believes it—until he continues with, "But maybe if you didn't get me so upset, I wouldn't hurt you."

Elizabeth is blinded by love and Kelli is the only one who knows. Kelli’s faced with the tough decision of keeping her cousin's secret, or telling her aunt so Elizabeth can get help.

Reviving Ophelia, named after the defenseless female character in Shakespeare's Hamlet, brings to light an incredibly important issue. Domestic abuse is the leading cause of injuries among women ages 15 to 44 in the U.S. and approximately 1 in 5 female high school students report physical/sexual abuse by a dating partner.

This film will help show girls in similar situations to Elizabeth that they are not alone and there is something they can do: Speak up. Reviving Ophelia will give women and girls the courage to stand up for themselves.

Be sure to tune in Monday, Oct. 11. Then come back and share your thoughts.
