Friendly Competition

It’s fab to exercise for your health, but a recent article in The Washington Post reported that the benefits of competitive sports stick with athletes for a lifetime.

Think about it: When you’re on the soccer field, you learn to succeed in high-pressure situations, know how to practice hard and see first-hand the importance of teamwork. Even if you don’t make varsity or score the winning goal, playing on a team can majorly boost self-esteem. Plus, research shows kids who are on sports teams in high school end up celebrating success later, by going to college and being paid more in the working world.

Not into crazy competition? The article recommended getting involved in more community-based athletic opportunities, like Girls on the Run (girlsontherun.org), which focuses more on setting goals than finishing first.
