3 ways to celebrate International Day of the Girl today
"Girls are dreamers and doers leading our world forward—growing up to become changemakers, innovators, entrepreneurs, service members, activists, public servants and so much more." We could not possibly agree more with this statement from President Biden's Proclamation on the International Day of the Girl.
It's true: Since the beginning of time, girls have changed the world for the better. Today's international holiday was created to celebrate just that *and* to shed light on the challenges girls face all over the planet. It's a day about empowerment, education and honoring what it means to be female.
Wondering how to commemorate this v. important day? Here's a few ideas to get you started...
1. Start a convo with friends and family
One of the most important ways to celebrate International Day of the Girl is to start an open dialogue with loved ones. Maybe chatting with your fam at the dinner table about your fave female role models. Or maybe just mentioning the holiday to your besties at lunch (and then making sleepover plans to watch a girl power film this weekend like Barbie or Hidden Figures). You could also play a round of girl power trivia with your soccer team. Either way, sharing your thoughts—and listening to what others think—could not be more important!
Here are some prompts to get your convo started:
Who is a girl or woman who inspires you and why?
What does being a girl mean to you?
What's your fave girl power moment from your life so far?
What do you think needs to happen to ensure more rights and equality for women?
2. Learn about inspiring girls and women
Another amaze way to celebrate the holiday is to do your research. Some ideas? Pick up a Malala book at the library, find some inspiring girls and women to follow on Insta or ask a teacher or parent for their input. There are *so* many amazing girls and women working to make the world a better place. It's time to learn more about them!
3. Give back
Giving back to the community is *never* a bad idea—and it's especially important on International Day of the Girl. Between donating and volunteering, there are countless ways to get involved. Some things to check out to get you started are learning about period equality advocates and how you can donate period products. Also, check out empowering organizations like the Malala Fund and Girls Not Brides.
