Woohoo! High school graduation rates at record high
Since the 1970s, the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) has been estimating the percentage of teens who graduated high school on time (that is, within four years of entering 9th grade). And right now, we’re at an all-time high: 78.2 percent of students graduated with a regular or advanced high school degree during the 2009-2010 school yeah. That’s an increase of more than 2 percent. Woohoo!
And before you start thinking, “Yeah, but what about the other 20-something percent of students? Are one-fifth of all U.S. high schoolers dropping out?” know this: the NCES estimates that the annual dropout rate has decreased from 4.1 percent to 3.4 percent. And that’s pretty darn good in our book.
Keep up the good work, girls, and remember that you can achieve anything you put your mind to. What are your education goals? Tell us in the comments!
