EXCLUSIVE! Actress Chloe Coleman *literally* stunted on us all in My Spy 2: The Eternal City
We spy with our little eye...the fearless and fabulous gal who's about to become your latest obsession. Actress Chloe Coleman returns to the big screen in her new action flick My Spy 2: The Eternal City (aka the thrilling sequel to the O.G. 2020 My Spy we know and love). The wait to reunite with sassy teen spy-in-training Sophie and her mentor JJ is officially over—the movie just hit Prime Video today.
Between filming on location in picturesque European cities, learning (and acing, might we add) her own adrenaline-spiking stunts and finding time to hang with her costar and actual pal Dave Bautista, Chloe's got a jam-packed sched. She made time for us to spill on everything we can expect in My Spy 2, plus a few behind-the-scenes secrets.
Girls' Life: We're so pumped to see My Spy 2: The Eternal City! Where do we pick up with your character Sophie when the sequel starts?
Chloe Coleman: There's a huge difference from where we see Sophie in the first movie, when she's only nine and her now, being a complete teenager at 14. It's a big passage of time. It's pretty personal and bittersweet to think how long it's been and the journey that she's gone on. I made mood boards and playlists to really prepare and picture, like, Who is Sophie when she's a teenager?
GL: Did you have to learn any cool stunts or skills for your role?
Chloe: I did infinite amounts of stunt training. I did a skydiving simulation. I got scuba-certified in Cape Town. I did a whole year of martial arts training. I went out a month in advance to work on choreography for fight scenes, and I learned how to ride a vespa. We drilled everything over and over, and it was so fun because I love stunts and I love being able to do them myself.
GL: Would you say you're similar to Sophie IRL?
Chloe: I will say that playing Sophie as a character has made me more of a daredevil. I've become a lot braver in doing stuff, especially physically risky stuff. She is really sarcastic, though. When we were filming, I felt so bad being mean to Dave! Because she's this angsty teen, wanting that independence. She has a lot less of a filter than I do. I love getting to play a character like that, though, because I can just totally let go.
GL: What was it like to reunite with the cast from the first My Spy film?
Chloe: It was really fun. I was so happy to be back with this cast and back with Dave. I love working with him. He's such a great friend, and I've known him now for all this time. Real life friendship definitely translates in the way that you guys play off each other onscreen. I think it makes our relationship in the film so much easier, because it's just so real.
GL: We heard you got to do lots of traveling for the film. What was your fave city you visited?
Chloe: I fell totally in love with Italy. I went to Florence, Rome, Venice. Everywhere I walked, I was just mesmerized by everything happening around me. It's such an enchanting place, and I miss it every day. I'm so grateful that we got to see and do so much. Also, best food ever. I felt like such a tourist, honestly. I was trying to play it cool, but I'm freaking out like: Oh my God, I'm in Italy.
GL: Do you have a dream role you'd love to play one day?
Chloe: I love action and stunts, so more of that would be so cool. And I'm really interested in doing a limited series because it'd be cool to have this long arc where you can really get into a character and spend time with them.
GL: Any advice for girls that are in Sophie's position, trying to survive being a teen?
Chloe: First off, I completely understand that feeling. The biggest thing that you can do to surround yourself with good people is just to be yourself. Being your most authentic self, doing what feels right to you, following your gut, listening to yourself, is what lets you find the people who'll make you so happy.
