The best Midnights lyrics you missed on the first listen
As you know by now, Midnights, Taylor Swift's tenth studio album, is out now. If we had to guess, the chances of you listening to this masterpiece nonstop are sky-high. But the first listen of any album can be v. challenging. With so much going on and so much new info, your brain can't keep up. So keep reading for some of the best lyrics you might have missed on your first listen of Midnights!
"Give me back my girlhood, it was mine first"
@ispywithmylittletiredeye ⚠️fake video⚠️ THESE LYRICS HURT #taylorswift #wouldvecouldveshouldve #midnights ♬ wouldve couldve shouldve by taylor swift - belle
Fans quickly realized that Would've, Could've, Should've was a direct message to John Mayer, who Swift infamously dated at the age of 19. In her song "Dear John" off Speak Now, she asks him, "Don't you think nineteen's too young?" Later on in Would've, Could've, Should've, she reflects on this relationship, singing "I never would've danced with the devil / at nineteen..." Fans melted down over this last line in one of the best bridges off the album, and we completely agree.
"Do you really want to know where I was April 29th?"
Another lyric from the 3 a.m. tracks! Specific dates can be hard to pin down, but some quick-minded Swifties realized that April 29th was the date of the Met Gala where Swift famously met current boyfriend/partner/fiancé/husband/who knows Joe Alwyn while still dating Tom Hiddleston. Once again, it's v. clear who this song is about.
"Picture me thick as thieves with your ex-wife"
This one might be pretty obvious, considering that the vibe of "Vigilante Sh*t" fit right into Reputation. Taylor famously released Reputation based on her leaked conversations with Kim Kardashian and Kanye West regarding West's permission to use Taylor's name in a song lyric. Needless to say, West and Kim have since gotten divorced. Considering Swift and West's long, dramatic history, it might be pretty clear who this is about.
"Sometimes I feel like everybody is a sexy baby / and I'm a monster on the hill"

These lyrics from "Anti-Hero" definitely had us like...what did she say?? However, some fans of the show 30 Rock quickly caught the reference. They realized that Swift is talking about not fitting in with traditional beauty standards that want women to look younger (ugh, gross). In this case, Swift is the "monster" because she feels older compared to an unrealistic standard for women in their 30s to look like teenagers/young adults.
