Girls' Life: What inspired you to start singing?
Sophie Michelle: I can still remember singing in the backseat of the car while my mom was driving me to school. That's actually one of my oldest memories! Music has had such an impact on me—it's part of my DNA. I could never live without it. I started singing karaoke in my hometown when I was about 9 years old. Since then, my passion for singing just grew more and more.
GL: Who are your role models—in music and in life?
SM: OMG, in the industry I have so many incredible singers who have inspired me so much, like Demi Lovato, Alicia Keys and Selena Gomez. In my personal life, definitely my mom. She is my biggest role model. She always believed in me and still supports me every step of the way.
GL: Tell us about your latest song, "No Brakes."
SM: "No Brakes" is such a fun song. It's all about the feelings you have when you're crushing on someone and you just can't stop thinking about that special person. I got to film the music video a couple of months ago, and it was such a surreal experience.
GL: What was the best part of recording the song?
SM: To be honest, "No Brakes" was the best music experience I've had so far in my career. The writing sessions were super cool, and listening to the song for the very first time was unforgettable. To top it all off, the music video was so high-tech with crazy visuals and colors. I'm so glad I had the opportunity to work with such amazingly talented people.
GL: How do you balance your career with being a regular teen?
SM: Now that I'm living in LA, I feel like it's so important to find a balance between school and my acting and music career. I do online school and have a teacher I meet on a weekly basis. Organization is key. Having my day planned out always helps me to get things done on time without getting behind on my schoolwork.
GL: What's your advice for girls hoping to pursue a singing career?
SM: Pursue your dreams and find your passion. If singing is your passion, I'd say the first step is to probably find a school or coach to teach you the basics of singing techniques. Always work hard and believe in yourself.
GL: What are your hopes and dreams for the future?
SM: I'm so grateful that I'm able to pursue my dreams as an actress and singer. I love my fans so much and they've been so incredibly supportive and loving throughout this amazing journey I've been on the past couple of years, since I started posting cover songs on my YouTube when I was just 11 years old.
GL: What's up next for you?
SM: Stay tuned for some really cool singing and acting stuff that I'm currently working on—so excited to share with you guys soon. XOXO!
