Exclusive: Cassidy Mack talks Zoey to the Max and playing a foster kid
GL: So tell us a little about Zoey to the Max.
Cassidy: Zoey is a young girl who runs away from her foster family because she doesn’t feel as though she belongs – she feels very misplaced and unloved. When Zoey's caught by the police, she's taken down to the police station where she meets the head sheriff. He finds out that she’s a foster child and he and his wife take Zoey home instead of letting her sleep in a cell. When she finds out she’s actually going to be adopted by the Jenkinses, she’s beyond thrilled. She feels like she finally belongs and has a family, but one day these bad guys come and steal the Jenkins' show dog Max. Zoey feels as though it’s her fault and her problem, so she and her good friend, go off to save Max. It’s a great family film.
GL: Was it hard for you, as someone who went through the foster system, to play a foster kid?
Cassidy: I don’t think that it was at all difficult to tap into what it was like to go through that, because I got to use all of those emotions that I did feel in the foster care system for Zoey. I think that people need to be aware of what’s happening in their town and all around the world. There are young children who are being taken from their families and put into a system where they don’t have anyone, and I hope that this movie makes more people aware and makes them go out and help these kids and give them a second chance to be the person that they were born to be.
GL: What was the best part about working on this film?
Cassidy: I loved ever single person who got to work on the project – they all quickly became family. We put our all into the project, but I think my other favorite part was getting to work with Max. Having a dog on set was a very fun and exciting process to try. We did actually have to get a second dog because the first dog wasn’t cooperating. I don’t think he was very fond of me. I loved the second dog, though. We really did become Zoey and Max.
GL: Can you tell us about Love Gives Chances?
Cassidy: It’s a non-profit organization where I empower foster youth to go after their dreams, to find their purpose and their passion in life and to not be defined by their past but instead find their future. We also encourage adults to adopt from the foster care system.
