Exclusive: The Fosters' Cierra Ramirez spills the deets on Mariana and season 2
GL: So how's it feel to have The Fosters back from hiatus?
Cierra: It’s amazing. The wait has been so long; it feels like it’s been forever. The fans have been so amazing doing all of their edits on Instagram and Twitter. They’ve been so excited and they make me even more excited for them to see everything.
GL: We're excited, too. Can you tell us a little about Mariana's dancing?
Cierra: You saw in the premiere that her dance team ended up winning, but Mariana ended up ditching her friend Tia to stay on the team. Now, Tia and Mariana are going to be creating their own dance team and competing against Anchor Beach, so you’re going to see them try to find some dancers at school. We’ll see how that unravels, but one thing I’m really excited about for Mariana this season is she’s joins the STEM club, which is Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. You'd never expect girly-girl Mariana to join, but it turns out she’s not all about the nails.
GL: What do you think about Mariana hiding her STEM scores from Mat in the last episode?
Cierra: At first I didn’t get it. She’s smart, she shouldn’t hide that for a boy. You shouldn’t change who you are. After changing her hair and realizing that pretending to be someone she’s not for someone else’s approval is wrong, you’d think by now she’d get it. But she’s young and she’s learning and lots of people can relate to that. The STEM stuff is definitely going to become part of her life.
GL: Do you think that interaction speaks to her relationship with Mat?
Cierra: I think they’ve always kind of been on a healthy track. I think Mat's a very good influence on her. He’s older, he’s more mature and he really helped her realize with the blonde-fiasco that she’s perfect the way she is. He’s a very good guy for her.
GL: Speaking of being blonde, was it as fun as they say?
Cierra: It was awesome. It was a wig, but it was nice. I got to live vicariously through Mariana because I’ve never dyed my hair before, but it was nice to be able to take it off at the end of the day, I have to say that. It was definitely very fun to play. I didn’t like Mariana’s reasoning behind it, but it was pretty fun to switch it up.
GL: So were you a dancer before you played one on TV?
Cierra: I did ballet when I was a little girl, but I never really was into it. Through Mariana I got to become a dancer, so it was really exciting. I got to work with Chris Downey, who is the best choreographer. He’s just so patient. He worked with me until I could get the moves perfectly. He really made me a dancer, so it’s been a fun experience.
GL: Is there anyone else on set that you have a good time with?
Cierra: We’re all really close. Whenever we’re filming the dinner scenes or the breakfast scenes, we’re just up to no good. Teri Polo is the funniest one on set, I would have to say, and she’s constantly pulling pranks. I always look forward to the end of the season because there’s always a view-n-chew, where we watch the episodes and have a big luncheon with all the cast and crew, and then we play a blooper reel. Usually, we call it the Teri Polo reel because we catch her on camera doing the funniest things.
GL: What's the best prank anyone's played on set?
Cierra: One of the camera operators has this little fart machine and he’ll do it in the middle of a scene. It’s just really funny – sometimes people will react to it and sometimes will go along and pretend it was them. It's fun. Just randomly you'll be in a scene that’s really serious and then you’ll just hear a big fart.
GL: That's hilarious. So what's your favorite thing about getting to be on a show like The Fosters?
Cierra: It’s been amazing to hear everyone’s stories and see how they relate to certain characters’ storylines. That’s the beauty of it. We’re representing people who don’t really have a voice. That’s really what drew me to this project in general, that it’s dealing with things that are so common and so universal but aren’t really on TV. It’s been really fun and to see that people are actually relating to it and it’s making a difference – it’s been an amazing ride and I can’t wait to continue into Season 3.
