We just found your perfect face mask

Please consider this a formal invite to our mask party. But with so many options from clay to charcoal to cream, how can you be sure you're picking the perfect one? No matter your skin sitch, we've found the bestie for your, um, complexie.

Sheet Masks

For the most part, sheet masks can be used by anyone. They're great for traveling because they don't take up much room, and the serum in the sachet won't spill or flag TSA if you're flying to a holiday getaway. Plus, let's be honest, they're also great for selfies—we don't make the rules (but we do snap the pics).

Sephora Collection Hydrating Face Mask, $6 | Holler and Glow Chasin Rainbows Hydrogel Face Mask, $4 | I Dew Care Let's Do This Sheet 5-Day Sheet Mask Set, $12

Mask this way: Sheet masks are typically hydrating since they lock in serum for better absorption and super-charged results, explains dermatologist Dr. Hadley King. Use one as often as you want (every day may be excessive, but you can be the judge of that).

Cream Masks

Similar to a moisturizer, a cream mask will leave you with a dewy glow—especially nice in the winter months when the dry heat inside (and cold air outside) can do a number on your skin.

Avene Soothing Radiance Mask, $32 | Alo Hydrate & Glow 1-Minute Mask, $38Kiehl's Avocado Nourishing Hydration Mask, $48

Mask this way: Cream masks are usually thicker, allowing them to trap moisture and promote healing, says esthetician Jenette Serrins. If you rinse off your masks (some cream masks can be rubbed in and left on), Dr. King recommends following it up with a moisturizer to maintain all that nourishing goodness.

Sleeping Masks

Overnight masks tend to have a gel-like consistency with an almost cocooning effect when you slather them on before heading to bed. Bonus: Your skin enters repair mode while you snooze, says Serrins, so it really soaks in the benefits.

Laneige Water Sleeping Mask, $32 | E.l.f. Holy Hydration! Sleeping Mask, $10 | Pacifica Wake Up Beautiful Super Hydration Sleepover Mask, $16

Mask this way: Choosing the right sleeping mask really comes down to what your skin needs. Dr. King says that there are lots of ingredients to look out for—like peptides, which can help to even out skin tone, or exfoliating enzymes that smooth. This should be the last step of your nighttime routine, layered on top of whatever serums or moisturizer you use.

Peel-Off Masks

Arguably the most fun masks, peel-offs have an interactive element to them that's ohhh-so-satisfying. Because they grip onto skin, these masks are best left to those with oily to combo skin types, says Dr. King (sorry, dry and sensitive skin sisters).

Freeman Cosmic Holographic Cleansing Jade Peel-Off Facial Mask, $3 | Lapcos Pearl Glow Peel Off Mask, $6 | Florence by Mills Detoxifying Mind Glowing Peel Off Mask, $24

Mask this way: Because you want the mask to dry fairly quickly, don't apply too thick of a layer. Also be sure that there aren't any areas left uncovered or risk it not coming off in one piece (a good rule of thumb is to start peeling from the edges to see when it's ready to be removed).

Clay and Charcoal Masks

If you have oily or acne-prone skin, this is the mask for you. Most of these masks dry or harden as you wear them, which helps soak up sebum and draw out impurities (aka getting the gunk out of your pores).

Versed Find Clarity Purifying Mask, $10 | Tula Claydate Detoxing & Toning Face Mask Stick, $36 | Garnier SkinActive Ultra Clean Charcoal 3-in-1 Wash + Scrub + Mask, $8

Mask this way: "You can spot treat with these masks when you have a stubborn breakout," shares Serrins. You can also mix and match: Use a clay, mud or charcoal mask on your T-zone (which tends to be oilier), then pair it with a creamier mask on the rest of your face. Just don't overdo it—a drying mask shouldn't be used more than two or three times a week.
