No seriously, what is snail mucin?

Whether you're a skincare lover or not, you've probably heard about snail mucin by now. This slimy new product has been all over TikTok (like seriously, we can't escape it). Tons of beauty creators are raving about this Korean skincare serum, but what actually is it?

What is it and where did it come from?

Yep, you guessed it: Snail mucin is actually from snails. It's the slimy substance that snails secrete when moving and protecting themselves (don't freak out yet—it's packed with tons of benefits). The snail mucin is used to produce products such as serums, moisturizers and eye creams.

The trend actually originated from K-beauty. The most popular brand for all things snail mucin is Cosrx—a legendary brand within the K-beauty world. They're known for simplistic formulas, innovative ingredients and affordable products.

What does it do?

Snail mucin has tons of benefits. The first (and most important) is that it is incredibly hydrating. It contains a natural supply of hyaluronic acid, which immediately replenishes the skin. According to a study published in Dermatology and Therapy, "Hyaluronic acid serum increased skin hydration by 134% immediately after application and improved plumpness, smoothness, fine lines and wrinkles."

Although more research is needed on snail mucin specifically, it's speculated that snail mucin promotes anti-aging. This is due to glycolic acid, which stimulates collagen formation, giving that youthful, glowy look

Finally, snail mucin is known for its healing properties. Next time you have a scape or minor cut, try applying some snail mucin to reduce scarring and speed up the healing process.

How do I use it?

If you want to try snail mucin products for the first time, beauty influencers suggest either the Cosrx Power Repairing Essence Serum or the Snail Mucin Moisturizer

When using the serum, make sure to always apply on damp skin. Next, rather than rubbing in the product, gently pat it into your skin. Finally, apply moisturizer after in order to lock in the benefits.

My review

Day 1: After my ritual "Everything Shower," I applied the Cosrx Power Repairing Essence Serum to damp skin. I thought the serum would be much more sticky, but it was super easy to spread around my skin and pat in. I didn't really know when to stop patting because it just stayed wet. I let it dry for a minute or two and applied moisturizer. The main thing I noticed was that it was incredibly cooling. I woke up and my skin felt super hydrated. Additionally, the redness on my cheek had subsided.

Day 2: I finally got the ratio of snail mucin down (1.5 pumps per use). I patted it in more this time and my skin still felt super moisturized. My redness was still going down, and I left my bathroom glowing. Side note: My makeup was easier to blend, and I loved the glowy base that my skincare routine provided.

Day 3: I'm *officially* a big fan of snail mucin. All I can say is my skin feels moisturized and hydrated.
