Have no fear. It's Just Kait!

It’s every musician’s dream to hit it big in the industry. 17-year-old Kaitlyn DiBenedetto, aka Just Kait, was one of those lucky few who did! She entered (and won) a contest to create the theme song for MTV’s show Parental Control, and after winning, MTV realized that she was something else.

Not only can she sing, but Kait also plays the drums and rocks out on the guitar! This girl is a true talent, and the way she’s rising up in the music world shows that. She was picked to do a remake of the song “Hot Stuff” for the MTV original movie Turn the Beat Around, and is currently on tour with the cuties of Honor Society ’til May.

We caught up with Kait to see how things have been for her since she started making it big and what it’s like to be on the road. Check it out…

GL: Your real name is Kaitlyn. What’s the story behind finding your alias: Just Kait?
Just Kait: The first reason is simply because my last name is like 11 letters long but the main reason was because I play almost everything on the record (guitar, bass, and drums) it’s “just” me. Playing all the instruments kind of sets me apart from other female artists in a sense, so by acknowledging it more, I stand out a little more as well.

What’s the biggest thing that has changed for you since making it big in the music scene?
Seeing the reactions to my music and how many fans tweet me now. It’s crazy! Sometimes I can’t keep up but I love it.

You’re currently touring with Honor Society. What’s one thing you take on the road with you to remind you of home?
I don’t really take one or two specific things, I just have my iPhone on me at all times and I made sure before I left that I took some really good pics of my family!

What’s your favorite song to perform at concerts and why?
It constantly changes but I really love playing “Sick.” It’s just a really energetic song and I love how the fans get into it. We usually close with that song so it’s a pretty fun song to go out with a bang! “Hot Stuff” is a close second right now, though.
You play a ton of instruments, but what’s your favorite to play and why?
Since I started on the drums first, they will always be my first “love,” but I think my favorite to play is guitar. There’s something about picking it up whenever you feel inspired that is just really cool. It’s like that immediate outlet that I go to. With drums, it’s a lot harder to make up melodies and words right away.

When you’re having a bad day, what’s one thing you turn to as a pick-me-up?
Every Paramore album. They are so uplifting and even the darker songs make me feel better. I also like hanging with my 3-year-old little brother when I’m home. He can always make me laugh!

You like to Tweet a lot. Is that a good way to keep in contact with your fans?
Yes! I love it. Ever since we’ve announced the “Here Comes Trouble Tour” with Honor Society, my followers have skyrocketed and it’s a really cool feeling. I love interacting with fans and keeping in touch so I think Twitter is awesome.
