Camryn Quinlan opens up about music and finding confidence

Camryn Quinlan is a singer and songwriter with a passion to make others happy through her music. We talked to the 13-year-old rising star about what sparked her love of sound, what it's like performing a cappella and how she hopes her music can inspire others.

Girls' Life: How'd you get started in music?

Camryn: I always had a passion for music, ever since I was little I'd always be humming a tune. That's really when I started singing and began my musical journey. My musical role models are definitely Ariana Grande and Alicia Keys—they are just amazing at writing music and they're mesmerizing to watch and listen to. So far, I've had so many highlights in my career, from releasing my own music to working with Acapop! KIDS

GL: What's it like working with Acapop! KIDS?

Camryn: I've been doing it about two years. It's a group of around 25 kids who come together—some singers, some beatboxers—and record a song a cappella (using just our mouths and voices). I've created so many friendships and bonds through it, so it's really been an amazing experience. Everyone is so kind, amazing and talented.

GL: What's the process of writing your own music?

Camryn: It depends, but mostly I come up with an idea or a concept first. I'll write some chords, come up with a melody and then add the lyrics. Even though I'm only thirteen, I mostly write about heartbreak. I get inspiration from movies, friends, even my own life. I could turn a friendship breaking up into a love song. I think it's really relatable for people.

GL: Any movies that *so* inspire you?

Camryn: TBH, lately I just keep rewatching The Office over and over again!

GL: And what's your style vibe rn?

Camryn: I really like high-waisted jeans with a flared bottom and some cropped sweaters. I'm into chains on my neck and hoop earrings. I really like to mix and match when it comes to my fashion.

GL: What's some advice you'd give to other girls your age?

Camryn: Surround yourself with people who really love you and enjoy you as a person. Put yourself in an environment where you can really be yourself. That's how to find true confidence.

GL: How do you hope people feel when they listen to your music?

Camryn: I hope they feel safe and happy. That's the main goal. I just want people to know they're never alone in this world.
