Becoming a social media influencer isn't just a passion project—building an online brand is a full-time job, one that takes serious dedication, intellect and hard work.

Take me for example: I started from ground zero and grew both my Instagram and TikTok to over a quarter of a million followers (and got verified) in two years. The journey was a trial-and-error process, but I eventually came across the key to online success: your social media must always shake hands, with a uniform message spread across each channel. I, personally, landed on the concept of style empowerment, encouraging people to express who they are in anything they pursue. Whether you watch my dance videos on TikTok or see my outfit shots on Instagram, unapologetic individuality radiates through the screen. See below for some of my top tips on how to figure out what makes *your* platform shine...and grow your following in the process.

Find your niche.

Adopt a category that suits you best—whether that's fashion, beauty, fitness or food—and run with it. The content you create should always reflect the niche you're focusing on, as people are drawn more to consistency, but don't be afraid to put your own spin on it.

Post regularly.

When it comes to Instagram, one photo or video per day fits the bill; make sure to share content at a consistent time so people know when to expect it from you. As for TikTok, feel free to post as often as you'd like; the more videos you share, the better chance you have of making it on the "For You" page and going viral.

Interact with your followers.

Show your supporters you care by liking or replying to their comments on your content. Hosting polls and setting "countdowns" to Instagram posts on your story is another way to get fans actively involved in your platform.

Host giveaways.

One way to increase social media engagement is by hosting giveaways that require something of your followers. Tell your supporters that whoever comments the most on your photo gets a makeup goody bag in the mail, or offer to send a package of candy to the person who makes the best edit of your TikTok videos!

Use Instagram Live to your advantage.

Try to go on Instagram Live at least three times per week so you can "guest" your followers and let them ask you questions. Supporters can share the live stream with others via DM, which may drive new accounts to your page.

Use corresponding hashtags.

In the comments section of your Instagram post, use 5-10 hashtags that relate (i.e., "#foodie;" "#fashionblogger;" "#beautyguru"). That way, those who post similar content will find your account under the hashtag and follow you.

Sell something.

Once your following becomes more established, start selling a product that carries your platform into your supporters' everyday lives. Items can include exclusive skincare, a merch collection, or jewelry—just make sure that whatever you're promoting coincides with your niche!

Partner with companies that share similar values.

Reach out via email or DM to brands that reflect a similar message to the one you're trying to get across. It may take time to secure a partnership (certain companies have a minimum follower count on who they work with), but in the meantime, feel free to share your fave brands on your feed gratis—and make sure to tag them for a potetial repost!

Most importantly, be authentic.

People can sense an inauthentic platform from a mile away. Make sure that you're passionate about whatever you're posting; being genuine is what will make others relate and ultimately help you grow.
