LIFE
Dear Carol
I am tired of my friend's lies
My friend’s mom is a drug addict. They have no electricity or running water. My friend fabricates stories to make her life seem more normal. She is also boy-crazy. My friends and I are afraid she’ll grow up to be like her mom. Can you help us confront her about her lying?
Dear Sick of Lies,
How awful that your friend’s mom is on drugs and that they’re so poor. I don’t blame her for wishing her life were different, do you? Instead of rushing to confront her about lying, be compassionate and boost her with compliments. What do you like about her? Focus on that. She’s probably boy-crazy because she’s looking for accept-ance. She could use kindness in her life, so reach out to her rather than criticizing her, OK?
