Bumps and Bruises
Whenever I bump into something, I bruise. What's up?
We spoke with Dr. Jeanne Petrek, surgeon/director at the Evelyn H. Lauder Breast Center at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, and she says you could just have "capillary fragility," and it is nothing to worry about.
However, if you are turning black-and-blue from just the tiniest nudges, check with your doctor. Excessive bruising can be a sign of anemia or (don't freak) leukemia, which is very rare.
Have you been taking lots of aspirin, Advil or Aleve? "Daily use of those types of medications tend to coat the platelets, making bruising easier," explains Dr. Petrek. Lay off the pain killers for a while and see if the bruisin' takes a cruisin'.
We want to hear from you! Send us your weirdest body questions here (seriously, we'll answer anything!) and it just might get featured.
