Baking soda can lighten your hair: True or false?

Is it true that if you add baking soda to your hair, it automatically lightens your hair up to one whole shade?

The jury is still out on the bleaching properties of baking soda. Many people create a paste out of baking soda and water to use as a squeaky-clean hair treatment. Some use it as a conditioning mask once a month while others use it every few days as a shampoo. You can find baking soda in lots of household products, from laundry detergents to toothpastes to dish soap to deodorizers.

We do not recommend using baking soda to lighten your hair. Some people report huge changes in hair color when they use is consistently as a shampoo, others report minimal changes while still others report no change at all. Some find it drying, others think it’s moisturizing.

Bottom line: Baking soda is a great cleanser, and if you wanna use it as a mask to get rid of the gunk left behind by conditioners and other hair products, do so sparingly (re: once a month). But if you want to lighten your hair, do it the right way, at a salon. When you bleach the color out of your hair, there’s no going back, and with something as unstudied as baking soda, there’s no telling what sort of effect it will have on your lovely locks.
