Have the sniffles? Here are your workout do's and don'ts


Think your case of the sniffles is your get-out-of-working-out-guilt-free card? Think again! Here are scientist-approved do’s and don’ts for working out when you’re not feeling 100 percent.

Do keep up your workout

A recent study looked at otherwise healthy college students with the common cold. Some of them sat out their usual workouts while others kept up with the routine. And guess what? Squeezing in a sweat sesh did not make a difference on rate of recovery.

Don’t bring it to the gym

If you saw someone sneezing all over the elliptical, would you want to hop on the machine right after them? Uh, right. Don’t bring your cold out in public—nobody wants to share your germs.

Do be mindful of your symptoms

If you have a fever or flu-like symptoms, hit the couch (or better yet, your bed). The flu is nothing you wanna mess with, so take it easy if your sniffles are only the tip of the iceberg.

Don’t push it

Yes, you can do your regular work out. But don’t take this moment as your big chance to crank out an extra mile. Remember, your body is not in peak form at the moment.

Do rest up

When you get back from your jog or finish all those crunches, hit the couch with a good recovery snack and take a breather. Protein, carbs and lots of vitamins and minerals will make you feel loads better.

Don’t forget the water

Your body—now more than ever—needs to be hydrated. So don’t ditch the H2O, babe!

Do remember your limitations

If you have other health problems, don’t think this is a blank check to work out like you’re training for a marathon. While the common cold isn’t terribly threatening to the average otherwise healthy person, it can be severely detrimental to someone with another condition. If you have other health concerns, always speak to your doctor before instating a new exercise regimen, and when you’re feeling unwell.
