Eat Right

We Tried It: A Junk-Free Lunch

Recently at lunch, I tried to go Trash-Free. It’s basically exactly what it sounds like: a lunch that leaves no waste, and anything that is left over is reusable or recyclable. The end product is good for you and the environment. You end up eating more fruits and veggies (no wrappers there!) and Mother Nature has less trash on her home turf.

I put my sandwich, soup, or other meal in a recyclable container, and fill up my aluminum water bottle to get me through the day. I put some fruit and veggies in a container, too. No wasted plastic sandwich baggies here. When I wanted something sweet, I made a delish dessert from girlslife.com. Stow it all in my fave lunchbox and I’m good to go!

It’s tough, though, because I need to remind myself not to pour a bag of chips into a container, and to try not getting behind on washing everything. But, at the end of the day, I feel like I really helped and reduced my impact, even if only a bit.

Some things to keep in mind:

This might be hard to do everyday, so don’t stress if you don’t recycle or reuse everything on the daily.
Everyone likes helping Mama Nature, so why not ask your school to do a schoolwide Trash-Free Lunch day?
If your parents always send ya to school with a paper bag lunch, ask them to get a cute lunch bag for you—there’s tonsa adorable ones out there.
