Banish bulky layers with GL intern Katie
Year-round, I’m always looking for easy ways to
layer while still trying to avoid adding tons of bulk. I’m a big fan of mixing
textures and styles to create a look that’s both girly and a bit tough. Which
is why my denim shirt has been a major staple this season, especially when
thrown over a dress and tights or a tunic and leggings.
There’s just one problem with a lot of oversized
shirts, denim or otherwise, that I’ve encountered. They don’t have a very nice
shape to them! Sure, my dresses come in at the waist and out at the hips, but
the button downs and denim shirts I throw over them often mask any sort of
feminine shape. So not ideal.
Although I can sew, I knew I didn’t want to
permanently alter my button downs and denim shirts because I also sometimes
wear them on their own. That’s when I realized the perfect solution would be to
only temporarily alter them. Enter my mom’s vintage pins!
The easiest way to get this look is to pinch
your shirt together (while you’re wearing it) at the back at the height of your
waist, and have a friend put the pins in for you. If you’re working solo, no
prob! Use a bit of chalk to mark the spots that you’re pinching, then take off the
shirt and place the pins in yourself. The best part is that you can change it
anytime you want, depending on how much alteration you’re after.
I love using these vintage gold pins that my mom
just had sitting in her jewelry box. If you don’t have any lying around,
consider hitting up a vintage store or Goodwill. I’ve found some pretty
decked-out pins there for only a couple bucks. Score! Or, go the DIY route and
decorate large safety pins however you like. Glue on pom-poms for a unique, fun
look, or go chic with little gemstones and beads.
There you have it: Your customized and oh-so-you
take on a denim shirt or button down. Don’t be afraid to change out your pins
for different looks, and even try stacking them like I’ve done here. Good luck!
