11-year-old inspires some serious social change with #1000BlackGirlBooks
11-year-old Marley Dias is tired of reading about "white boys and dogs." (And, really, aren't we all?)
As she told Philly Voice, that's why she decided to start #1000BlackGirlBooks, a book drive with the goal of collecting 1,000 books featuring black girls. Disinterested in the lack of diversity found in books like Where the Red Fern Grows and the Shiloh series, Marley decided to seek stories "where black girls are the main characters in the book, not background characters or minor characters."
According to Entertainment Weekly, Marley will continue to collect books until Feb. 11, and has reportedly met about half of her goal. So it's time to dig through your bookshelves, GL girls!
Have you read any books that may be a good fit for #1000BlackGirlBooks? Let us know in the comments!
