In a world where only the royals (those with Silver blood) have powers, Mare Barrow is an anomaly. She's a normal Red blooded girl just trying to get by – or at least, that's what she thought until her own special powers started to manifest themselves. Once the royals find out that she's like them (but at the same time, totally not), they force her into fake-nobility to hide her differences from the rest of the village. 

Pretending to be one of the upperclass proves difficult for Mare, though, since she's never known anything but life in her poor town. Not only is Mare playing at being a long-lost Silver blooded princess, she's also working the double agent angle as an inside man for the Scarlet Guard, the Red blooded rebellion dedicated to over-throwing the system. Caught in a world she doesn't know while working for the enemy, Mare faces danger at every turn.
