Stereotypes get squashed in The Blossoming Universe of Violet Diamond

Calling all bookworms who love a great read about the importance family, friendship and acceptance. The Blossoming Universe of Violet Diamond by Brenda Woods is a heartwarming story about Violet, an African American girl who lives in a white-dominated society. Violet feels different from everyone surrounding her, especially because the rest of her family is white and blonde. Her father was also African American, but he passed away before she was born. When Violet turns 11, though, she sets out to find out more about her African American heritage.

Read along as Violet becomes more aware and interested about her past and how it can affect her future. Instead of accepting stereotypes and believing in the perceptions of others, she chooses to use her past to fuel her future.

We love the serious girl power that is represented in this book and how it encourages others to learn about their heritage. It’s super important (and fun!) to know where you came from and how you ended up where—and who—you are today.

Take some time to read The Blossoming Universe of Violet Diamond (on sale Jan. 9) and talk to your parents or guardians about your own family history. This book is super relatable and has some serious family lovin’ that will keep you turning the page.
