Breaking Pointe shares the dark side of ballet

Pink slippers and frilly tutus may come to mind when you hear the word “ballerina.” But The CW’s new show Breaking Pointe, premiering Thursday, May 31, at 8 p.m. ET, will show all that beauty and grace of ballet comes with a price.

Though ballerinas may make their dances seem effortless, their calm poise and elegant moves are masking the extreme pressures and battles they’re facing internally. With cutthroat competition, intensive practice and unfailing determination, these dancers are true athletes.

Breaking Pointe gives viewers an unscripted look at Ballet West in Salt Lake City, where ballerinas strive for perfection and nothing less. You’ll see what really happens when the lights aren’t on and the curtains aren’t up—talented, but exhausted dancers who push through the blood, sweat and tears to perfect an art form. Inevitable jealousy and dirty politics play a larger role in the ballet scene than you may think.

Want to clear up the misconceptions and know the real stories that go on behind the scenes of a ballet company (while also looking at some of the most beautiful dance performances around)? Look no further. The hard work and dedication that these true athletes have just might push you to your “breaking pointe.”
