Today is Juneteenth — here's why that's so important

Since school is out in most places, you may be missing history class — and today is an important day to talk about history and how it can shape our future. Today is Juneteenth, commemorating the true end of slavery in the United States.

Though Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863, it wasn't until the end of The Civil War in April of 1865 that all slaves were free — plus, it took an extra two months for word to spread to the entire country. Juneteenth commemorates Union army general Gordon Granger announcing federal orders in the city of Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865.

This year, Juneteenth is especially important, as George Floyd's murder has reignited efforts to eradicate racism from our society.

Watch the video below for more on Juneteenth and remember to carry the message with you to June 20 and beyond.
