Where are teens spending their money rn?

Social distancing has changed the way we live our daily lives. Without being able to go to most physical stores, online shopping has reached an all-time high. Are teens contributing to this trend?

Back in January, Lexington Law predicted that the average teen would spend $2,600 in 2020. A lot has changed since then! The COVID-19 pandemic seems to have thrown this prediction off course. CNBC reported that number has dropped 13% to $2,300. This is the lowest teen spending has been since 2011.

Teens are spending less money right now for a number of reasons. For one, they aren't able to hang out with friends at the mall, movies, resturants or other places that cost money. Another factor is they may have lost a part-time job.

17-year-old Loren Miranda shared with Poynter, "My job at Chick-fil-A has sent most of the front-of-house staff home, including me, because mass gatherings are no longer allowed and we are strictly working drive-through." Some teens are making less money, therefore spending less money.

But where are teens still spending money? It differs based on gender. Girls spend most of their money on apparel, followed by food and personal care. Guys spend most of their money on food.

The top two resturants for teens are Chick-Fil-A and Starbucks. Most locations of these two chains are still open, offering drive-thru service only.

Athletic brands are most popular in the apparel cateogry. Nike is the number one brand teens buy. Other top brands are American Eagle, Adidas, Lululemon, and Vans.
