All Eyes On You
A trip to a mall food court with your buds may not seem like a big deal to you, but for some girls, it can be downright debilitating…and dangerous. Sometimes called “shy eaters,” some young women feel super self-conscious about eating in front of others, even their good friends.
According to an article in USA Today, not eating in public is known as EDNOS (eating disorders not otherwise specified). Other EDNOS include obsessive dieting, purging occasionally and chewing and then spitting out large amounts of food. Often, people who suffer from these issues often don’t get help because they don’t think they have a problem. For some girls, these problems won’t necessarily lead to more dangerous behaviors, but for others, they act as a gateway to full-blown eating disorders and serious health consequences.
So what should you do if you are among the many shy eaters? Challenge yourself to overcome the fear of eating in public. Talk to your parents or a counselor about it. Surround yourself by individuals who have a healthy outlook on eating. And be aware of the dangers of eating disorders—it’s a slippery slope—and one you definitely don’t want to go down (click HERE to learn more.).
