Chris Massoglia: A different kind of vampire

What does a naive teen, a creepy freak show and a poisonous spider have in common? The makings of one chill-tastic flick.

The Vampire’s Assistant (in theaters Oct. 23) follows Darren Shan who, after stumbling upon an illegal freak show with his best bud Steve, must become a vampire’s assistant (and half vampire himself) to save Steve’s life. Based on the Cirque Du Freak book series by Darren Shan, the movie will definitely put you in a spooky Halloween mood.

We caught up with 17-year-old Chris Massoglia, who plays Darren, and are just dying to share six fabulous facts you just have to know about this budding star…
1. He’s a risk taker. “As an actor, this was my first big role in a major film. It was very different from anything I had ever done. Being able to observe Oscar-nominated actors was, in a lot of ways, similar to Darren being thrown into this crazy world of the Cirque Du Freak and having to learn to become a vampire.”

2. He always gives it his all. “There is a scene in the movie where my vampire nails go into the chalkboard. In order to do this, I just used my normal hands, but the chalkboard was fake. During rehearsal, I just went for it and made marks all over the board. [But] they had told me a MILLION times, ‘wait until we are filming to touch the board.’ I felt so bad.”

3. He sees, um, imaginary things. “The spookiest thing for me is when I think I see something, and then nothing is there. I always imagine I see something, or I’ll catch movement out of the corner of my eye, but nothing is really there.”
4. He trick or treats. “Every year for Halloween [I] go to my grandparents’ house, have a nice dinner and then go trick or treating with all of my cousins. I remember one year I was obsessed with Power Rangers. I wanted a red Power Ranger costume super bad. My mom got me one and I started freaking out.”

5. He’s a cautious driver. “Right now my biggest fear is being caught speeding by the cops. I have this fear of seeing the blue and red lights in my rearview. So far I haven't gotten a ticket so that’s good.”

6. He’s not all Hollywood glam. “I live in Minnesota. Lots of people assume that if you want to be an actor you have to live in Hollywood, but not me.”

Be sure to catch Chris on the big screen when The Vampire’s Assistant lands in theaters Oct. 23.
