Cassie Scerbo Makes it—or Breaks it
Wishing the Summer Olympics was around again this year? Us, too! Even though we’ll have to wait ‘til 2012 for the next action-packed event, ABC Family’s giving us our own gymnastic fix with their new scripted drama Make It or Break It (premiering Monday, June 22 at 9 p.m. ET/PT). The show is set in the world of competitive gymnastics, where a group of teen Olympic hopefuls train non-stop for their dream.
We caught up with 19-year-old Cassie Scerbo, who plays ultra competitive Lauren Tanner on the show, and had her dish on everything from sports to summer…
GL: Tell us a little bit about the show and your character Lauren.
Cassie Scerbo: It’s about four girls and one gold medal. We are all Olympic hopefuls. It’s pretty crazy, a lot of fun, very edgy, with a lot of love triangles. My character is basically the drama queen. She brings all of the trouble to the show. But at the same time, people are going to realize she actually has the most issues in her life and insecurities.
GL: Did you have any formal gymnastics training beforehand?
GL: What’s the best piece of advice someone has ever given you?
CS: My mom taught me my whole life that everything happens for a reason and there is a reason for everything. If you never give up and keep reaching for your goals, they will happen.

GL: Did you have any formal gymnastics training beforehand?
CS: When I was younger, I did gymnastics for about a year a half. But, for the most part, I’ve just always been really athletic. It’s funny because I don’t look like it, but I am the biggest tomboy on the inside. I have played soccer my whole life and always did track. I am a boxer [now], which is something really unique and interesting. But, I’ve never really had a true gymnastics background.

GL: Summer’s finally here. What’s your favorite thing about the season?
CS: Going on vacations with my family and friends. I come from a really large Italian family and we are very close, so just being with them is the most amazing thing.
GL: Do you have a favorite summer dish?
CS: Actually, the [one type of] food I like to eat year-round is pizza. I am pretty much obsessed [with it]—particularly from New York. Having those amazing places on every corner in the city is the best.
GL: Spill: What scares you the most?
CS: Sharks. I guess I am a daredevil and, during the summer, I will go in the ocean really far out and surf. But just the thought of a really big shark [in there] freaks me out.
GL: What’s your favorite TV show this minute?
CS: I love The Secret Life of the American Teenager. It’s very interesting how they went a little edgy. They opened up the envelope last year with that show and I have loved it ever since.
GL: What about your favorite song?
CS: Right now it’s “Wonderwall” by Oasis. I make my boyfriend play it on the guitar every day.
GL: And if there was one actor you could work with, who would it be and why?
CS: I have to say this because it is such a phenomenon right now: Robert Pattinson. I am in love with Twilight. I seriously eat, breathe and sleep Twilight.
