Taylor Swift is getting an honorary doctorate
Ahem, that's *Dr.* Taylor Swift to you. Tay is getting an honorary doctorate! New York University announced that Taylor will not only be the commencement speaker for the class of 2022, but she will also be receiving honors. Taylor will receive a Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa. See NYU's complete announcement here.
With Taylor Swift being one of the most accomplished musicians of all time (see the 11 Grammys she's won), it is only fitting that she be awarded an honor like this one. Honorary doctorates are awarded to individuals who are extremely successful within their field. And to be honest, we can't think of someone who deserves it more! Already at NYU is a class on Tay's career, which unsurprisingly has a super long waitlist. The class aims to explore “Swift’s evolution as a creative music entrepreneur, the legacy of pop and country songwriters, discourses of youth and girlhood, and the politics of race in contemporary popular music”. Sounds like our absolute dream class!
And we are *so* jealous of NYU's class of 2022. Also, let's talk about the number 22 being in there...what are the odds?! Tay has been known to give impactful and inspirational speeches like her 2019 Billboard Woman of the Decade Award speech and her acceptance speech at the 58th Annual Grammys. We can't wait for May 18 so we can listen to her eloquent advice and insight.
Also, Tay totally manifested this. During her 73 questions with Vogue interview in 2016 she was asked “What’s one goal you’re determined to achieve in your lifetime?” To which she responded: “I really want an honorary doctorate degree because Ed Sheeran has one and I feel like he looks down on me now because I don’t have one.” That had to be an Easter egg right? Or maybe just really well-timed foreshadowing?
Tay joins an impressive list of other celebs who have received honorary doctorates. Others include Queen Elizabeth, Oprah Winfrey, Michelle Obama, Tracee Ellis Ross, Aretha Franklin, Kerry Washington, Meryl Streep, Muhammad Ali, Denzel Washington and Ed Sheeran.
This will be Taylor's first degree, as she graduated high school already a country music sensation and did not attend college. We are so excited for Tay, and all the 2022 graduates this year to be honored for their hard work and determination!
