Ari G. is *so* excited about her new project

We’re just over halfway through 2016 and it’s proving to be a whirlwind year for Ariana Grande. In April, she killed the MTV Movie Awards with her performance of “Dangerous Woman,” in May she set off on her headlining Dangerous Woman Tour and she just collaborated with singer/songwriter Victoria Monet on the song “Better Days,” to support the civilians and cops who recently lost their lives to tragic acts of violence. It's obvious Ari is staying busy and her schedule is about to get even busier.

We already know she can dance, act and sing, so doesn't it make sense that a musical would be her next move? On July 7 she tweeted, “I AM NOWWW A CHECKERBOARD CHICK #HairsprayLive #Penny,” and that can only mean one thing—Ariana will play Penny Pingleton in NBC’s December production of Hairspray Live!, a role the singer says she’s wanted to play since she was a child.

Ariana gushed over how excited she is to be a member of what she calls a “dream cast,” which includes Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson, Derek Hough, Martin Short and newcomer Maddie Baillio as Tracy Turnblad, the leading role and Penny’s best friend.

But truthfully, this isn't her first musical. Even before landing her role as Cat Valentine on Victorious, Ariana was heavily involved in theater and, at 15 years old, performed in the Broadway musical 13. Hairspray Live! will premiere on Wednesday, December 7 and we can’t imagine a better way for Ariana to wrap up such an already successful year.

Are you excited to see Ariana play Penny Pingleton in Hairspray Live!?
