Exclusive: Kelli Berglund dishes on Lab Rats: Bionic Island, having powers and what it's like to get punched in the face
GL: So what are some major changes between this season and last?
Kelli: The whole set has changed because what happened at the end of season three with the scheming Dr. Krane and all the bionic kids. We’re still the Lab Rats and all of us are still on the show, but now we're all just kind of unsure of what to do, so Davenport decides to create this Bionic Island where Adam, Chase and Bree can act as mentors to all of these students. We get to teach them how to use their bionics effectively and in the best ways possible to set up for missions and things like that.
GL: Any big secrets you can share with us?
Kelli: Well, we have a crossover happening with Mighty Med which is another Disney XD show. It's really fun because there’s never been an XD crossover before, only ones on Disney Channel. There are some storylines that introduce new characters, too. I don’t know how much I can say yet, but some of the younger kids play a really big part in upcoming episodes. And we have some really cool guest stars.
GL: Rumor has it that we're going to see Kickin' It's Leo Howard make an appearance.
Kelli: Yeah, he will! It’s really cool because we’re all pretty good friends with Leo, he’s an awesome guy. It’ll be fun for fans to see his character, too, because it’s really different from anything he’s ever done. I definitely don’t want to give that one away, though, because there is a really big twist to the storyline.
GL: Woah, we can't wait to see. What's it like doing all the stunts on set?
Kelli: I do most of the fight scenes myself with the exception of some really big things that happen or huge flips. Being a dancer definitely helped with learning stunts just because I already have that sort of athleticism, so being able to remember choreography is pretty easy. Everything that you see, punches and kicks and very intimate combat, is all me. I would love to do more harness work, though, like being lifted in the air and doing all kinds of crazy stuff.
GL: Which one of Bree's abilities would you want to have in real life?
Kelli: It would be a close tie between superspeed and invisibility. Invisibility would be such a cool thing that I wouldn’t tell anyone about and would just kind of trick people and play some pranks on them. Honestly, though, superspeed would probably help me more in the long run. It'd be great for everyday life.
GL: Any particularly memorable moments from on set?
Kelli: It’s not really a funny story, but in the Mighty Med crossover we just filmed, I have to fight one of the superheroes (Skylar played by Paris Berelc), and she’s so sweet and she’s so great. We had to do this scene where she throws a punch and I’m supposed to catch it with my hand. The stunt coordinator told us how it was gonna happen, to punch at this height, but the other day when she went to do the punch, she went a little too high and totally punched me in the face. I was okay, but it was like a hard punch that I was definitely not expecting. She didn't mean to do it whatsoever, but I’d never been punched in the face before.
GL: It seems like an important life experience, though, so now at least you can check it off your bucket list!
Kelli: I know! Get punched in the face, check. I’ve never been in an actual fight before, but now I can say I got punched in the face and sound really tough.
Are you excited for the premiere of Lab Rats: Bionic Island tonight (3/18) on Disney XD at 8:30 p.m.? What are you looking forward to most from the new season? Let us know in the comments and don't forget to tune in.
