Exclusive: Veronica Dunne spills to GL about tonight's K.C. Undercover premiere
GL: What was it like landing your role on K.C. Undercover?
Veronica: I started doing musical theater at a really young age and absolutely fell in love with it. I had the business in my blood. When I was younger I watched Disney Channel every single day, and I remember saying to my mom, “I want to be up there.” It's very challenging – for a while you get down and think, "Oh, maybe it’s not gonna happen," but it was just waiting for the right show and the right time and the perfect character. Finally it’s here and I couldn’t be more ecstatic.
GL: That's awesome! Can you tell us a little about Marisa?
Veronica: Marisa is K.C.’s best friend and she’s definitely the life of the party. Extremely outgoing, she always wants to be the center of attention at all times. In many ways K.C. and Marisa are definitely opposites. Since Marisa is such a social butterfly and K.C. would probably prefer to stay in a cocoon, I think Marisa encourages K.C. to spread her wings and fly and enjoy life. And at the same time K.C. helps Marisa stay grounded and stay real. What’s really cool about their friendship is, no matter what happens, they always work it out. They just love each other so much and bring each other so much joy. It’s a great dynamic to see on screen.
GL: We love that. Are you and Zendaya as tight off set?
Veronica: Yeah, we have a lot of fun. We had an instant connection – at auditions, something just clicked. She’s just so supportive and down to earth and kind.
GL: So how does Marisa fit into the Cooper family, since she doesn't know their super spy secret?
Veronica: She’s definitely still part of the family. I think sometimes it's almost annoying to the Coopers because she’s there so much! As far as not knowing secrets, though, K.C.’s going to have to start cancelling plans and making up lies to her friend, and it actually causes some conflict between her and Marisa. K.C. kind of hits a fork in the road where she has to decide, do I tell my friend and risk saving the world and my job to trust Marisa, or do I keep the secret and possibly ruin a friendship? She’ll have to make the decision whether to tell her or not, and you’ll have to tune in to see what she does.
GL: We can't wait to find out. Do you think Marisa would make a good spy?
Veronica: I think if she was a spy, disguising herself and using character voices would be what she had the most fun at. She just is such a silly girl and so kooky and I think she would love to be in character and dress up and play pretend, but I don’t think she would be as good at it as K.C. is.
GL: Got it. Is there anything in particular you're excited for fans to see in the show?
Veronica: For my character, I’m excited for them to see more of what makes Marisa Marisa. I think it’s really easy to stereotype her as just a silly blonde, but after a while in the episodes you really see her insecurities and where her heart is and how much she loves her friend and wants the best for her. In the episode we’re filming this week she has a really sentimental moment with K.C. She comes off really confident and like she has it all together, but she's able to say, "Hey, I don’t have it all together, I’m not perfect, sometimes I wish I could be more like you, K.C." I think the humanity in that is so special.
GL: Do you have any big plans for the premiere tonight?
Veronica: Yeah! Zendaya collaborated with her parents and talked to the cast and they decided they wanted to do a huge blow-out premier party with press and a red carpet and the whole shebang. I think that was just such a great idea and a wonderful thing for them to do for us. I can't wait.
What's your favorite thing that Veronica shared with us? Are you excited to meet K.C. and Marisa? Make sure to tune in to Disney tonight (1/18) at 8:30 p.m. to catch Veronica and the rest of the cast in K.C. Undercover's premiere episode.
