Girls on social media demonstrate #thepowerofmakeup to be empowering

Millions of girls around the world love to play around and experiment with clothes and makeup. Unfortunately, the common misconception is that the only reason girls put so much effort into looking cute is because they’re insecure and want to impress boys. As we all know, that’s totally FALSE.  Looking good on the outside makes you feel more confident on the inside, which allows you to face the world as your best self. It’s not just about what others think.

“Makeup shaming” is the term for putting a girl down and calling her insecure because she wears a lot of makeup. It’s just another example of girls facing a double standard—if you don’t wear makeup you can be criticized just as easily as if you do.

#Thepowerofmakeup all started with a Youtube vid by beauty vlogger Nikkie (NikkieTutorials) describing how she has fun with makeup and uses it for herself.  Now, she’s started a major Instagram trend of girls posting pics of themselves, often with half their face made up and half au naturale, along with their stories about why they love wearing makeup.

Check out some of their pics, along with Nikkie’s original vid below!

“#thepowerofmakeup I do my makeup for myself. Not for boys. Not to cover my insecurities. But because I love the art and the fun things you can do [with] it.”

“I tried to do #ThePowerOfMakeup challenge, but it turns out, there isn't much of a difference. You don't need makeup to make you feel beautiful; you're flawless regardless.” —thatssoreagan
