Buh-bye, microbeads! Stock up on your favorite scrub
But what you might not know is some of the exfoliating scrubs you may be using could be doing some serious damage to our much-loved planet. Some brands’ cleansing products utilize “microbeads,” also known as round plastic pieces that aren’t at all sustainable. These suckers are polluting the water around us and filling up the Great Lakes…yikes!
Although popular companies we know of like Aveeno, Caress, Dove, Neutrogena and Ponds have completely banned the use of these dangerous beads in their products, these sneaky micro scrubbers continue to creep their way into other brands, (often hidden under the label “polyethylene”).
It won’t be until December 2015 that companies will be forced by lawmakers to completely remove the use of microbeads in their products with more natural replacements like salts, apricot seeds and cocoa beans.
Until then, we suggest reading the ingredients in the scrubs you buy and eliminating the bad stuff to keep our natural resources pollutant free. Together, let’s wave goodbye to the plastic and bring on the eco-friendly stuff we love.
Do you use a product with microbeads? Will you be nixing it or stocking up before they’re swept from the shelves? Spill all in the comments below.
*DIY TIP: To make your own all-natural body scrub at home, mix sugar and olive oil together for the ultimate moisturizing exfoliator.
