Rainbow - An original poem
Rainbow
She desperately grasps
Into thin air
Trying to grip colors
That are no longer there
The world is quickly darkening
The colors soon graying
She tries to save the vibrancy
From slowly but surely fading
They tell her she can’t sing
Can’t use the rainbow colors
They want her to keep
Growing duller and duller
The sky is washed out
The grass is dried up
The rainbows are gray
No longer bringing good luck
She sits by the window
Tears running down her face
As she tries to imagine
A colorful place
Neverland, perhaps
Or the City of Oz
Trying to recapture
Everything the world’s lost
Only in her heart
Do the colors reside
Shining through her soul
Welcoming in light
It burns so brightly
She can hardly see
When people turn to darkness
She simply thinks, “Not me.”
The desire for good
Shoots straight through her mind
The world is so boring
With everyone in a straight line
But how can she fight
When people push her down?
How can she live
In a darkness filled town?
She stares at the sky
Praying to the heavens
Hoping for colors
A rainbow with seven
She thinks to herself,
“What can one little girl do?”
But she knows the power
Of colorful hues
So she opens up her heart
Creates her own rainbow
Beaming out sunshine
Shouting hello
She welcomes in light
And banishes sorrow
She stores away the fade
And looks on to tomorrow
The lesson to be learned
Is not about “supposed to be”
It’s about your own colors
Being who you want to be
